UTMUN ( 9-12 February 2017) UTMUN University of Toronto Model United Nations Conference

On February 8th, 2017, FMV Ozel Isik High School's Model United Nations (MUN) club set out for its first MUN conference on the North American continent. A delegation of seven was brought by Kevin Palmer to the University of Toronto's annual MUN conference (UTMUN), Canada's premier and oldest MUN conference. This particular conference represented a unique challenge to our club, as it was the first conference in which our members represented the only non-Native English speaking delegation in a conference, but our MUNers rose to the occasion.

Particularly noteworthy for his success was Emre Arli of 10B. Emre won the best delegate representing David Lloyd George in the reenactment of the Paris Peace Conference of 1919. Another delegate with unprecedented success was Sude Basmergen of 11A. Sude represented South Korea in the Disarmament Committee (DISEC), effectively drafting and lobbying a resolution for the first time in her MUN career. Deren Aykan, Berk Karaata, Mileyna Kescioglu, Nur Sertbas and Yagmur Ates also attended the conference, and were commendably active throughout the lively and high-minded debates around topics ranging from safeguarding against the spread of pandemic diseases and ameliorating the effects of rampant neoliberal policies in Latin America, to the integration of the former Soviet Republics into the global economy. The committees and the countries our MUN delegates represented are as follows:
